The Neville Brothers: Brother's Keeper
All of the Neville Brothers' recent albums for A&M have been frustrating, uneven propositions, with great performances followed by disjointed numbers, and the studio productions seldom conveying the excitement and fire this group routinely generates in concert. The same holds true for this release, even though it got more pop exposure and chart penetration than any previous Neville Brothers album. But despite their energetic vocals and often superb instrumental interaction, this release still didn't come close to presenting the Neville Brothers on a good night, much less a great one.
The Neville Brothers' recording of the Parker / Phillips classic "Mystery Train" on Brother's Keeper probably should count as a cover of a Band song too, since it includes the additional lyrics that Robbie Robertson wrote for the version of "Mystery Train" that The Band did on their "oldies-album" Moondog Matinee.
