Soundtrack Album: Casino

(2 CDs)

[cover art]

It seems that Robbie's partnership with Martin Scorcese has continued in Scorcese's latest film, Casino. I didn't notice Robbie's name amongst the credits when I saw the film (although I might have missed it) but the soundtrack CD bears the legend "Soundtrack Album produced by Robbie Robertson" and there is a photo of Robbie with Scorcese in the booklet. Quite how much "producing" Robbie was called upon to do, though, I'm not quite sure as all the tracks are oldies (with the possible exception of the orchestral theme by Georges Delerue). Maybe he chose the running order. :-) I must say there is an excellent choice of tracks, the soundtrack being probably the best thing about the film (in my opinion). Of greatest interest to Band fans is Clarence "Frogman" Henry's original version of "Ain't Got No Home", which the Band covered on Moondog Matinee, of course. Other Band associates featured are Muddy Waters ("Hoochie Coochie Man"), The Staple Singers ("I'll Take You There") and Eric Clapton (Cream's "Those Were the Days"). There are a lot of other good tracks too, e.g. Nilsson's "Without You", Roxy Music's "Love Is The Drug", B.B. King's "The Thrill Is Gone" and Lee Dorsey's "Working In A Coalmine", although as it's a double CD, the whole thing is a bit pricey.

There is an entry for the film in the Internet Movie Database
