The City of Stratford, Ontario honoured Richard Manuel, late singer and keyboardist of legendary Canadian rock group The Band, during Canada Day festivities at City Hall (July 1st, 2004).
A bronze plaque was presented by Stratford City Councillor Chris Rickett to Richard's brother Jim Manuel. The plaque will be laid in the sidewalk in front of Stratford's old post office at a date to be determined later this year. Richard Manuel was born and raised in the small south-western Ontario city. He played in a local outfit called the Rockin' Revols before finding fame with The Band in the 1960s-80s. Manuel took his own life on tour in 1986; his cemetary plot is located in Stratford's Avon Cemetary. Three other honourees - Bruce Stapleton, Emily Trout and Lloyd Robertson - were also recognized by the city. |
